The guys of Jack Ass may not known for their rational behavior, but they still tend to avoid breaking the law as much as possible. Unfortunately, in trying to make a statement about Sea World, star Steve-O did exactly that and now he is facing five different criminal charges. San Diego criminal lawyer Peter M. Liss examines the charges against the performer and what penalties he may face.
For the stunt in question, Steve-O climbed a crane in Hollywood, hung an inflatable orca from the end of it and then set off fireworks. Unsurprisingly, emergency responders were called to the scene. He is now being charged with trespassing, creating a false emergency, use of unregistered fireworks, storing fireworks without a permit, and possession of fireworks without a permit. It’s worth noting that if he performed a felony while on the crane, he could have been charged with burglary as well, but since the act he intended to commit while trespassing was a misdemeanor, he escaped this charge.
Misdemeanor charges are obviously lesser charges than felonies, but you still need to take these charges seriously and approach them with the help of a top San Diego criminal defense lawyer. In Steve-O’s case, the charges all carry a maximum sentence of six months to a year in jail, plus $1,000 in fines. The performer will also be required to reimburse the city for the cost of their emergency services that showed up at the scene, including five ambulances, a helicopter and 80 firefighters. While Steve-O isn’t hurting for money and likely won’t blink at the fines and restitution for his crimes, he certainly doesn’t want to end up in jail for the next three years. With the assistance of some skilled criminal defense attorneys from San Diego, Hollywood or other Southern California area, he will hopefully be able to avoid any incarceration. On the other hand, considering he was previously cited for protesting Sea World in an elaborate stunt, it is also possible the judge and prosecutor will choose to make an example of him and sentence him to a short period behind bars. Only time will tell how things will go for Steve-O.
